Seeing the bigger picture
Scottish Football Museum, Glasgow on Monday 15 May 2023, 09:00 - 17:00
hybrid conference both online and in-person
SESSION A @ 1110
For Folks Sake
My talk will be about incorporating intangible heritage into interpretation of folk collections, in order to give a richer understanding of our past. There is a variety of knowledge surrounding folk objects and folk collections:
The tangible:
how they were made
why they were made
what they were used for
who used them
when
AND
The intangible:
Folk and traditional stories the objects feature in
Superstitions, beliefs and cultural importance surrounding the objects
Superstitions and beliefs about the materials they are made from and the techniques used to make them
Incorporating both the tangible and intangible parts of our culture we can create more opportunities for discussion and engagement with our folk collections and prompt adults and children alike to notice connections between ours and other folk beliefs from different cultures.
Speakers Bio
Eileen Budd, Travelling Folk Museum, Storyteller
I am a Scottish author, artist and storyteller with over 20 years experience working with national museums. I was raised in Perthshire in a family with a tradition of maintaining oral storytelling practises. I specialise in traditional Scottish folklore, folk traditions, folk objects, origin stories and ancient Scottish legends. I travel all over Scotland with the Travelling Folk Museum, using storytelling, illustration and object handling to help bring Scottish stories from working class history and folklore to life for a range of audiences, including early years, primary and high school students and adults. The objects in the Travelling Folk Museum are a combination of historic ones and replicas. The replica objects have been made by contemporary artists and crafts folk using traditional techniques.
